"Electroenhanced Antimicrobial Coating Based on Conjugated Polymers with Covalently Coupled Silver Nanoparticles Prevents Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm Formation"
As the antimicrobial effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) has been well described, we aimed to functionalize surfaces based on the conducting polymer PEDOT by covalent coupling of AgNPs. Using the functionalized PEDOT-AgNP surfaces we investigate biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus on these surfaces. We show that the coupling of AgNPs to the organic bioelectronic surfaces minimized biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus. Interestingly, application of a 5 Hz square wave potential to the PEDOT-AgNP functionalized surfaces leads to complete abolishment of biofilm formation.
